This is certain to make your new teacher smile...
This bucket, filled with goodies of your choosing will start off your teacher's year right!

Begin with an empty coffee can with the label removed and any sharp edges filed off. Have your Mom or Dad use a nail and hammer to poke two holes on either side of the can, opposite of each other (this is where the handle will be)

You will need-

  • acrylic paint
    background color (we chose white)
figurine colors (we chose green & red)
  • brushes
  • drop cloth
  • raffia sponge
  • shapes (we chose apples & leaves)

Paint the outside of the can white or some other background color of your choice. Allow this paint to dry thoroughly. Use sponge shapes to decorate the outside of the can. Dip the sponge shape into a color and apply randomly around outside of can. Once the paint has dried, string raffia through the holes and tie off to form a handle. Do this again with the other hole.

Now fill the can with items that your teacher might use this school year. Suggestions-chalk, chalk holder, E-Z grader, colored pens, pencils, overhead markers (vis-à-vis) cough drops, tea bags, book of poetry, power bar... you get the idea.

Message Board
Here is a great way to keep track of phone calls, commitments, etc. and it looks great too!

Start with purchasing a small chalk board or dry-erase board and a wood frame which will fit around the board.
Use wood sealer to seal the wood frame in preparation for painting. Once The sealer has dried you may apply your base coat color to the frame. When this has thoroughly dried, apply with sponges different shapes to decorate. Allow these to dry. Apply using craft glue, small, prepainted, wooden shapes, buttons or other embellishments to the outside of the frame. You could even purchase the letters for your name to place them around the perimeter of the frame. Once the frame has dried well, have your Dad or Mom hot glue the frame to your message board.

Back to school time is a great time for a faux pajama party. Get permission from your Mom or Dad to host the party...then begin planning.

Begin by determining how many girls your parents will permit you to invite.

Using construction paper, create invitations in the shape of a sleeping bag. You will be sending these to the girls parents as a keepsake since this is a surprise party for you guests. The written invitations are optional but, before sending out the invitations, call each guests parent's to inquire if they can attend your party. They are to 'come as you are' in their pajamas. You and your Mom (or Dad), clad in your own pajamas, will pick up your guests at their homes. Ask that each girl bring a clean (not fabric softened) pillow case on which to paint.

Plan some fun games to do once the girls arrive while breakfast is being prepared. A scavenger hunt throughout the house is fun. After breakfast, you can begin making your pillowcase keepsake. Having purchased fabric paint and sponge shapes and prepared the painting area with drop cloths, give each girl a paint shirt and they can begin *painting and decorating their soon to be personalized pillow cases. Each girl can sign her friend's pillowcases and add their favorite Scripture verse as a memento of the party! For instance:
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. They are new every morning.
Or…
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Or…
In peace I will both lay down and sleep for Thou O Lord dost watch over me.

*Important-Each pillowcase will need to have a cardboard piece inserted inside so that the paint will not bleed through to the other side. (Old file folders or empty cereal boxes can work for this) The pillowcases will need to dry several hours.

After the craft, you can play a game of slipper match. Pile all slippers (or shoes) in the middle of a room and then call 'go' to have your guests hurry to find their pair of slippers.

Outfit Relay
If have some old clothes or clothes your parents won't mind you using, pile them in the middle of the room…form two teams.

The object of this relay race is to find one complete outfit (not necessarily matching), put it on then quickly take it off and pass to the next person in line until all team members have had the outfit on.

A complete outfit would consist of button-downshirt, pants (skirt, blouse) socks, shoes accessories of some sort. Make certain in the pile that two complete outfits can be put together for each relay team. The last person in line must take the outfit off and put all the clothing back in the center of the room.
